Maintaining Critical Stormwater Infrastructure
Mechanical Vegetation Solutions (MVS) was engaged to deliver annual sediment removal works at the Watson Avenue sediment basin, located adjacent to Adelaide Airport.
The basin manages stormwater flows from the Keswick and Brownhill Creeks and plays an important role in protecting nearby residential areas and infrastructure.
Location: Adelaide Airport, South Australia
Client: Adelaide Airport, South Australia
Timeline: January – February Annually
Sector: Government and Infrastructure
The Issue
Over time, sediment carried by stormwater flows accumulates within the basin, reducing its capacity and limiting its effectiveness in treating runoff.
Without regular desilting, this build-up can impact water quality, increase maintenance requirements, and compromise the performance of surrounding infrastructure, including the nearby airport and residential areas.
MVS’s Role
MVS delivered a complete desilting solution, managing the project from planning through to sediment removal and transport.
Works were carefully scheduled during the driest period of the year to minimise water flow and allow safe access to the basin. Pump systems were installed to fully dewater the area, creating suitable conditions for excavation while maintaining environmental controls.
Once dewatered, accumulated sediment was removed using specialised machinery and transported from site.
Environmental Compliance
All sediment was sampled prior to removal by qualified personnel and tested through a NATA accredited laboratory to ensure classification aligned with South Australian EPA guidelines. Following excavation, material was transported to a licensed facility for processing through approved composting streams.
Throughout the project, MVS operated with a strong focus on safety, environmental responsibility and compliance, particularly given the basin’s proximity to critical infrastructure and residential areas.
The Outcome
The successful delivery of the project restored the basin’s full operational capacity and ensured it continues to function effectively as part of the region’s stormwater management system.
Key outcomes included:
- Restoration of sediment basin capacity
- Improved stormwater treatment performance
- Ongoing compliance with environmental regulations
- Safe and efficient delivery in a sensitive, high-profile location
Project Impact
This project demonstrates MVS’s capability to deliver complex environmental and infrastructure maintenance works across South Australia.
With experienced personnel and appropriate equipment, MVS continues to support clients with safe and compliant outcomes.
